same location, different day

One day back in January when there wasn’t snow on the ground (say what?!?!), I woke to a super foggy morning. When I looked out the window, the first photo is basically what I saw. I grabbed my camera and ran across the street to capture the moment. It was gone within 20 minutes with the sun peaking out. I posted it on FB and my favorite comment is from Bethany about seeing things in a different way. One of my goals for 2014 is to push myself to see beyond the norm, as I mentioned in the New Year post (which you can see my instragram photo at the bottom). I decided to start a new series on IG, #samelocationdifferentday. First up will be the view from our window during different times. Hopefully this will continue to inspire me throughout the next few months and see the world in a different light!

how I use dry shampoo

If you are on Pinterest, you’ve probably seen how to make your own “just about anything”, from deodorant to laundry detergent and more. One of the hot topics that I’ve come across on many occasions is the dry shampoo debate. Since I work out 5 days a week (and most of those days I teach multiple classes), I wanted to give insight on how I use homemade dry shampoo to prolong a nice blow out and protect my hair from damage.

  • First up, the most important part is to take the time blow out your hair after a shower. This is key in lasting days without actually shampooing/conditioning the hair in the shower.
  • Secondly, when you do workout, pull all of your hair away from your face and neck. Use the popular elastic hair ties (as seen below) – they will not tug at your hair or create creases like the Goody’s brand at the store.

  • Third, when I get home from class, I brush my hair out and let it air dry. Most of the times this is all I do (since most of my classes are in the evenings), but when I teach a morning class I’ll let it dry and then add the dry shampoo.
  • The dry shampoo (for brunettes) is simple: you need 5 teaspoons of cocoa powder and 2 teaspoons of cornstarch. Add to a jar, shake and you are ready to go! At one time, I was just adding the shampoo to my hands and then massaging it into my scalp. While that worked, it went everywhere! Then after some research, I discovered that many people use a makeup brush to apply it. This has revolutionized my dry shampooing days!!
  • I dip the brush into the jar, tap the sides to remove excess, add to my head, allow the shampoo to sit for 5-8 minutes (usually this is the time I brush my teeth and begin applying makeup!), then really work it into the scalp like you would normal shampoo. It’s really that easy and you know exactly what you are putting on your head.

  • Once the shampoo has been worked, I use a large tooth comb to make sure there aren’t any big clumps that I missed. The other comb pictured below is a teasing comb. This is essential – go out now and buy one. I finish my hair off with the teasing at the roots to give volume where it was lost after working out and sleeping. I don’t use hairspray, and rarely feel like my hair needs it to give it volume.

Here is my workout schedule along with when I normally wash my hair.

Monday: 1 Adult Zumba in the morning + 1 Zumba Kids in the evening
Tuesday: 3 Zumba Kids back to back in the evening
Wednesday: 1 Zumba Kids + 1 Adult Zumba in the evening
Thursday: 1 Adult Zumba in the evening
Friday: 1 Zumba Kids in the evening

I try to wash my hair on Sundays, which sets me up for a week of washing every other day or so. If I wash on Sunday, then I’ll wash on Tuesday and Friday. If I don’t wash on Sunday, then I’ll wash after my Monday morning Zumba, Wednesday and Saturday.

lancaster, pennsylvania

One of the many adventures Anthony + I set out upon in our final years in the Princeton area included visiting PA Dutch Country. I found a B+B special on LivingSocial and we ended up visiting on one of the coldest weekends of the year. It was fairly miserable, but we always try to make the best of any situation! Saturday morning we went down to the Lancaster Central Market, walked up BUiLDiNG CHARACTER, an amazing multi-shop warehouse full of so many goodies, both new and used, then hopped in the car for Wilbur Chocolates and Julius Sturgis Pretzels in the adorable town of Lititz. We rounded out the day at what PA Dutch Country is famous for – the smorgasbord. We hit up Shady Maple mainly because it was the closest one to where we were staying (and it was open! which we found to be a problem with many things we wanted to try since January isn’t “prime” time for visitors!). Sunday we woke early with the sun shining to visit a handful of covered bridges in the area. Most of the photos below came from that time, even with a pit stop at the Ephrata Cloister before they opened to the public (don’t tell anyone that we snuck on the campus for a few photos!). Now that we have visited the area, it is such an easy day trip from Princeton, that we’ll probably go visit one more time before we leave the area!

berkey filtration system | our experience

I first blogged about the Berkey Water Filtration System back in 2011 (and there are still some great tips on that post for those just starting out in green living). I wanted to make a dedicated post to the Berkey and how it’s worked for us since we first received it as a Christmas present in 2010. While we ended up having some issues with the first few filters, the Berkey customer service was great and got us out new filters right away. I believe all and all they had to send us 3 different replacements. I’m happy to say that now at the first of 2014, the filters have been doing their job perfectly. Every few months (typically when we get back from vacation or a weekend away), I dump all the water, take it apart and give it a deep cleaning with hot soapy water.

One question I’ve been asked repeatedly is how to fill up the Berkey with tap water. We have a beer growler that we use, though I imagine we could also use the sink spray hose now that the Berkey is located near the sink!

This is looking down into the top compartment with the two black filters. Attached on the bottom (inside the bottom compartment) are two PF-2 fluoride filters.

To make sure your filters last, is to clean them regularly with a washcloth, hot water, and soap. Also, another trick that I discovered, is if you don’t feel all the water is filtering (i.e. there is still water in the top compartment), to scrap a bit of the filter off. It doesn’t damage anything other than removing some of the build up that will happen (especially if you have hard water!)

When we finally move to a more permanent location, I will begin the search for a whole house filtration system! The Berkey is the perfect solution in the meantime.

If you have any questions about our experience with the Berkey, please feel free to shoot me an email or leave a comment below!

the new year

Hold it a minute, it is January 18th of 2014. WHAT?!?!? We are over halfway through the first month of this year!! I’m taking the time now to catch up on this blog + dedicating myself to crossing off items on the to-do list that have been sitting there for months and month before the spring craziness hits.

I’ve never been a resolution-maker, but this year I have a few simple, random ones that I wanted to share on here.
I love drinking water, plain cool water, no lemon or other flavors. That is typically my go-to drink. Anthony got me addicted to Coca-Cola when we were dating in college, so I do drink that occasionally. I detest the smell of coffee, so that’s not a drink I’d ever think to try. You can see where I’m going with this, right? On a whim back in December, I picked up some Trader Joe’s Pomegranate White Tea. I gave it a whirl and sorta liked it. My first resolution is to enjoy hot tea more! This is one flavor that I can get behind and I’m proud to say that I’m almost finished with the box.

This resolution is more Anthony’s but I’m 100% on board too. We are planning to make the most of the last few months of living in Princeton. I’m a huge fan of shopping locally and we are hoping that the Trenton Farmer’s Market becomes more of a habit for us. Right now there isn’t much produce (obviously!!) but in the spring it’s going to be magical.

Next one is A’s resolution and that’s to wear more scarves. This won’t be a year round resolution, considering all of his scarves are winter-esque, but he does look mighty fine wearing them! Though thinking about it, now that it’s warmed up a smidgen since the “polar vortex” hit, he hasn’t put one one in awhile!

Last one for now is to get out with my camera/iPhone. Earlier this past week, I woke to a very foggy morning. I really wanted to capture the moment, but also had to shower. I hurried through my morning routine, grabbed my phone and big camera, walked across the street and was able to execute exactly what I envisioned in my head. Not to toot my own horn, but this rarely happens for me. I end up missing the sunset, or not having the time to stop to get the deer in the meadow, or whatever it is. About 20 minutes after I walked back indoors, the fog lifted and the sun shown down. It was beautiful to see outside our window.
